Abstract. Anxiety disorders are a growing public health problem that needs the attention of specialized and trained personnel. Currently, there are 11 anxiety disorders (AD) classified in the DSM-V, all with similar clinical characteristics such as distress and fear. The general prevalence of these disorders ranges from 4-24% in different countries. In Mexico there is not current information due to the lack of data reported by national surveys. A series of non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments for the control of these disorders have been described, however, more research is required to find new treatments without side effects. The aim of this review is to describe the diagnostic criteria, prevalence and treatments for AD.
